Some information on the Corona situation:
Guatemala, with a population of about 18 million, has moderate infection rates by international standards (see below). This success is thanks to the current president, who is a doctor himself and who took sensible measures early on.

Crossing the border into Belize from Guatemala is currently not possible for foreigners not resident in Belize.

The state of emergency (Estado de Calamidad) continues. There is a general curfew from 21:00 (9 pm) to 4:00 am. In public places, it is mandatory to wear a mouth and nose protector. Distance and hygiene rules must be observed.

Since Guatemala is the land of eternal spring, most activities can easily be moved outside. Only about 0.7% of those infected worldwide have been infected outdoors.

Therefore, for all travelers from more northern countries, it can now be said that the probability of getting infected in Guatemala is lower than the probability of getting infected in your own country of origin during the cold season.

As a student of Spanish you should take the following precautions:
- Before traveling, take a virus test so as not to endanger your hosts in Guatemala.
- Please do not travel with corona symptoms.
- During the flight and the journey, please wear respirator masks!
- Choose a school that offers outdoor classes. This reduces the risk of infection of teachers or students almost to zero.
- Choose a host family that shows no symptoms.
- Have meals together with the family in well-ventilated rooms or in the courtyard.
- Avoid celebrations in poorly ventilated rooms.

As in all other countries of the planet, it is difficult to get hard facts about the corona virus for Guatemala. According to www.epidemic-stats.com/coronavirus/guatemala/, there are about 8,000 infected people in Guatemala at the end of September 2020, and about 700 newly infected people are identified daily. More than 3,000 people have died in connection with the virus so far. As in other countries, the number of actual cases could be 5 to 10 times higher.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Don Pedro de Alvarado Spanish School. The school is beautiful and close to everything. The teachers and staff were wonderful, patient, and caring. I studied 6 hours a day with Dalia in the morning and Wendy in the afternoon and the time flew by. Not only did I learn Spanish from my teachers but they also helped me get acclimated to a totally different culture. My home stay was with Margoth who owns a panaderia. Despite a language barrier, she and her family made me feel at home. The food was wonderful and they were a tremendous help with my Spanish. I highly recommend the school, in fact I hope to return next summer for a longer stay.

I spent one week in Xela at Proyecto Lingüistico Quetzalteco de Español and one week at the mountain school. In Xela at Josefinas house, she was nice and caring for me. I liked the mountain school very much because of the location and all the people who live or work there. We where only 5 students at this time and had a good time. Teacher Ronnie was a good teacher. I also liked the information about the life, the history and politics of Guatemala which was very interesting. Also the activities where interesting.

I loved my time at the school. My Spanish improved a lot over the four weeks and has held me in good stead during my travels in Latin America so far. There were a good range of activites outside of class, and both teachers I had were very good. My host family were very welcoming, and very nice. Maybe a little more food would have been good!
Ulew-Tinimit Spanish School was always quick to respond my letters.

I studied for a week at Antigüeña Spanish Academy. I lived with Maria and studied with Carlos.
Both were absolutely fantastic! Carlos is an intelligent, warm, understanding, and empathetic person who is an absolute joy to study with. He was incredibly prepared every day, paced the lessons perfectly, and made the experience fun and productive. My friend worked with Byron and we ended up working together quite a bit - he was also an amazing teacher and great person to be around.

Because of my experiences with both Maria and (especially) Carlos, I would love to return.
As for afternoon activities, I only went once to a Macadamia Nut farm - it felt more like a sales pitch than an activity.

Fine, very informative, and they did a good job translating emails from my school to me. I just am very puzzled what happens to the hefty enrollment fees especially as you can also just walk in a school and join without the fee if there is availability.
